Taps and Dies and Helicoil Thread Repair
We stock a wide range of taps and dies in ISO metric fine, extra fine and standard (i.e. coarse) threads. These are all top quality high speed steel (HSS) machine items. We do not stock carbon steel versions because they break, even with very light use!
Damaged female threads can often be repaired with a Helicoil insert. These are fitted with a special 3-part tool set comprising a drill and a tap that create a slightly-oversized thread with the same pitch as the original thread, and an insertion tool that enables you to screw in the new insert.
The end result is a new thread that is the same diameter and pitch as the original thread, allowing previous fixings to continue in use as before. Helicoil tool sets and separate inserts are available.
Damaged male threads can be cleaned with an appropriate die. Beware that this will not recover the full strength of the original thread. A replacement fastener is generally the best option, where available.

Occasional use of a die for thread repair can be done with an appropriate socket and tommy bar. This can be a cost-effective approach for re-threading a motorbike rear axle, for instance.
